Protection Status in Canada’s Marine Bioregions, 2015
Protection statistics were compiled in April 2015 by Living Oceans Society, in partnership with OceanCanada. Protected areas were tallied as “no-take” if they were classed as IUCN type Ia, Ib, II, or III, even though we know that fishing closures are the exception, not the rule in many of these areas. In addition, not all MPAs were assigned an IUCN type at designation and this gap in information varies among bioregions.
