The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the Science family of journals, has elected Dr. Rashid Sumaila to the newest class of AAAS Fellows, among the most distinct honours within the global scientific community.
Dr. Rashid Sumaila, OceanCanada Scientific Director and University Killam professor in UBC Science’s Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, as well as the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs in the Faculty of Arts, has won the Royal Society of Canada (RSC)’s Miroslaw Romanowski Medal for scientific work relating to environmental problems.

BOULDER, CO: In the midst of cascading crises from climate change to biodiversity loss and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Earth Leadership Program – the global successor to the renowned Leopold Leadership Program, now in partnership with Future Earth – has announced its 2021-22 North American cohort.
Dr. Rashid Sumaila, professor in UBC Science’s Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, as well as the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs in the Faculty of Arts, is one of six faculty members who have been named by UBC as a University Killam Professor. The University Killam Professorship is the highest honour that UBC can confer on a faculty member, and recognizes exceptional teachers and researchers who are leaders in their fields, and who have received international recognition for their talents and efforts.
Congratulations to OceanCanada's Dr. U. Rashid Sumaila who has won UBC's President's Award for Public Education through Media, for his ongoing sharing of oceans and fisheries research expertise through the news media.
William Cheung has been named a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.
The College comprises top mid-career leaders in Canada and provides the RSC with a multigenerational capacity to help Canada and the world address major challenges and seize new opportunities including those identified in emerging fields.
